Life Thur the Lens 19/52... Wildflowers of The Black Hills

The Fun...

The warm breeze graces the land and the snow melts as the last tulip withers away. And, just like that, spring has sprung and the wildflowers spread across the forest floor.

The Good.... A Hike FULL of Gratitude....

  • the scent of warm pine needles in the air
  • the rustling of the trees as they sway in the wind
  • mocking birds singing back and forth to one another
  • squirrels scampering through the forest
  • the smell of rain as a thunderstorm rolls in
  • tom turkeys strutting in all their glory
  • a forest floor covered in wildflowers

Life Thru the Lens 18/52... Spring in The Black Hills; looking for color

It is not always easy to find color in spring when you are still packed in snow. Our world began to spring forth with unseasonably warmer weather and then the jet stream shifted and brought back winter to our doorstep.

“When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest. The only thing that could spoil a day was people and if you could keep from making engagements, each day had no limits. People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself.”
― Ernest Hemingway

With the new snow came the grumbling of hearts. The people of The Midwest are ready for warmer weather and sun clad days. I do not blame them, to have the sun wash your soul with happiness is a good thing. But for me, I reveal in the snow laden days, and the contrast of the earth against the white blanket of snow; it brings me comfort.

Life Thru the Lens 14/52.... back to still life, pursuing your photography passion

I love still life photography. I find pause in the creative nature of building props to compose a story in photo. Over the last few months my still photography has stagnated for several reasons... lighting, having all my props stored in a bin, lack of creativity, lack of inspiration. I have found, in our transition, that I am a creature who is invigorated by having all my things around me. Creativity comes as I pass a prop and the light is splashed across it so softly that I must capture it, then and there. Our circumstances will change, and eventually we will be in our own home, but until then I am finding that I have to pursue still life photography. Pursuing something is not always bad. Matter of fact, I feel as though I grow more in my art if I have to actively pursue it.

Questions Answered:

Q. Where do you find your backgrounds?

A. At craft stores, and often enough hardware stores. I found cheese cloth extremely cheap at a hardware store. It comes in larges pieces, which is fantastic for backgrounds of for mingling among my props for texture.

Q. Where do you find your props.

A. Everywhere, but I love the dollar aisle at a certain retail chain with a huge target of a sign. {Wink, Wink} I also love junk stores and antique stores. I have found most of my linens at junk stores. Buyer beware, if the tag is pinned to the cloth be sure to take it off yourself so that the owner of the store does not rip it off. Sigh.

Q. What lens do you use.

A. My 50mm. I have tried other lenses, but I always come back to my 50mm 1.8.

LTTL...15:52... a photography confession

So, my big confession. I did not take one photo with my big girl camera this month. Honestly, I didn't even realize it until I went to make my "A Month in Review" collage. Some months seem to flutter by, the days rambling into one another, until it is all done. It's during those months that I tend to ride the wind of life and just be. It's good! It's good to live life sometimes, instead of documenting it.

LTTL... 14:52 a little honest color

I'll be honest, since moving back from Europe, winter is hard for me. Some of you know my story from my old place at Four Simply Living, but I three years later I still struggle with leaving abundant color and delving into a world of brown, and then green. During those monotonous months of singular color it's a battle to thrive. I find it easy to lose focus, and to wallow in the "what if's" of life. But then, spring and fall arrive and I am revived with a new spirit of motivation, and an urgency to make up for those lost months.

This winter was much better for me; my struggle was much shorter, only hitting hard those last few weeks of winter. I believe part of that is very much due to this Life Thru the Lens community. You fill my heart right up, and I thank you for that!! The other part is that I chose not to wallow as much this year. I chose to try to capture the seasons with intent... my new by-line... and when you choose joy over wallowing, joy (eventually) wins out.

Happy Spring Friends!
