Life Thru the Lens 14/52.... back to still life, pursuing your photography passion

I love still life photography. I find pause in the creative nature of building props to compose a story in photo. Over the last few months my still photography has stagnated for several reasons... lighting, having all my props stored in a bin, lack of creativity, lack of inspiration. I have found, in our transition, that I am a creature who is invigorated by having all my things around me. Creativity comes as I pass a prop and the light is splashed across it so softly that I must capture it, then and there. Our circumstances will change, and eventually we will be in our own home, but until then I am finding that I have to pursue still life photography. Pursuing something is not always bad. Matter of fact, I feel as though I grow more in my art if I have to actively pursue it.

Questions Answered:

Q. Where do you find your backgrounds?

A. At craft stores, and often enough hardware stores. I found cheese cloth extremely cheap at a hardware store. It comes in larges pieces, which is fantastic for backgrounds of for mingling among my props for texture.

Q. Where do you find your props.

A. Everywhere, but I love the dollar aisle at a certain retail chain with a huge target of a sign. {Wink, Wink} I also love junk stores and antique stores. I have found most of my linens at junk stores. Buyer beware, if the tag is pinned to the cloth be sure to take it off yourself so that the owner of the store does not rip it off. Sigh.

Q. What lens do you use.

A. My 50mm. I have tried other lenses, but I always come back to my 50mm 1.8.

LTTL 10:52... a crazy busy week

Last week was a bit crazy on the schedule part. We went from never leaving the house, to having appointments a couple times a day. Needless to say, Life Thru the Lens and Random Friday went by the wayside, right along with linking up and visiting other sites.

However, I am learning that it is good to give ourselves grace when life hits us in the face. It's good to linger a little bit longer in a book, or to sit in the sun just a moment to soak it up; you know that those tiny specks of time are way more useful to your emotional state of mind, than to immerse yourself into the cyber world during every single morsel of a moment found.

I did manage to create two works of art, in my opinion. I'll share my first creation here today and the second one on Friday. And, if I have the chance, I think I might unpack a bit more of our years in Europe as well.

Until the rest of the unpacking begins, I think I'll have a little tea...

{For app happy Wednesday... edited on VSCO.}

I worked on my prompt(s) for my photography class this week. One of the prompts was dinner plate... where I had to take a top down shot, with no more than 5 organic items on my plate. I know this is literal, especially compared to some of the fantastic shots that others put forth, but I like the literal approach.

My next prompt was stacked. I decided for this shot I wanted to try my hand at two types of light, a more dark and moody lighting, and back-lit.

I was inspired by a post from a few weeks back, by a very creative Brenda K. I wish I could show you the shot. It was amazing. My shots do not compare... but, for my first attempt at moody with shadows, I am pretty happy.

{Both photos were edited using KK Dreamlike Preset with a few hand edits.}

I've decided to work in two different size formats for my still life photography... 4x5 and square. It definitely makes me stop to think about room to crop and perspective; I needed a good photography challenge.

{Photos edited with KK Today Preset, with some minor hand tweaks}

I love the idea of a montage, so, I created these back-lit shots with that in mind. I have to say, when I shot them I loved them, but when I downloaded and edited these photos I wished I had taken them all face-on. Now, I can see why it would be nice to have a laptop connected to my camera to see real-time views. The editing bothers me a bit as well. I think I'll go back and crop the two middle photos so that the boards on the first three photos are on the same horizontal plain. I think the last photo works because the horizontal plain of the board would fall into the same eye level as the top of the towel on the cookbook.

Good photo screams perfection. And, although it seems like a ton to achieve, I think if you are aspiring to do something with your work you have to begin to look at all aspects of photography and not just what it is that you like about the photo. As a creative spirit, I think it is a challenge to create a piece of work that screams "she did that" but also falls into the whelm of customized perfection. Hmmm... I think I might love that kind of challenge.

The bottom set is also for my stacked prompt... I plan to share one of these on my Instagram feed for THE COLOR OF THE MONTH CHALLENGE... which is red.

LTTL 9:52.... the good, the random, and the fun

THE GOOD:

Spring has sprung here. Well, not with tiny buds, or blooming crocuses, but the weather says it is here. It is only a matter of time before the trees and plants follow suit.

{All edited with VSCO cam... I love the A5 filter right now.}

THE RANDOM:

I had one of those mornings this last week. You know, the kind where you make the coffee but forget to actually put the coffee in the coffee pot. It finished brewing, and I looked over at it with bewilderment, before I realized what I had done. A friend gave me a great idea for when that happens again, pop in a few tea bags, and voila you have tea.

{Edited using VSCO Cam, and Handy Photo}

We visited IKEA last Friday. I have not ventured into an IKEA since we left Germany. It was so surreal to pull up to the looming blue and yellow building and to feel like we were right back in Germany, but not. My heart still lingers there, in Europe. We will have been back in the US three years this summer, but I am just now finding it bearable enough to unlock my memories of our time there. The grief is becoming better with each passing year, but it is still there clinging to my heart.

{various hand edits with kk-simple 45% at soft light}

THE FUN:

We began a fun project this weekend, since the weather is finally warm enough to work outside in the garage. I'll give you a hint until I show you the final project. I was taking this with my phone, with icky hands, so do not mind the terrible photo ;-D.

I am working on another project as well. I have mentioned a few times already this year that I am a part of The Studio over at Kim Klassen's place. This last week we had a community meeting of fellow creative spirits, online, and boy, oh boy, my creative juices have been on fire ever since. Along with Elizabeth's question, and now this meeting, I feel as though I am finally making strides in focusing my photography. So, a few things are going to changed here and there, but overall I do not think you will notice it too much. If you do, don't mind the dust from a little spring cleaning.
